From Elie's flying journey. Personal aircraft pictured; planned rental pricing below is for a Cessna 172.
Every student pilot pays for their licence twice: once with their calendar and once with their wallet. Here is what our founder learned getting his own PPL, and how GTA Flight Academy is built around those lessons.
Part one · Time
45 hours is a floor, not a forecast.
Transport Canada requires a minimum of 45 hours of flight time for a Private Pilot Licence. When I started, I set an ambitious goal: finish in 45 hours, maybe 50. I figured that if I flew every day, I'd be done in about four months.
It took me over seven.
Here's why. Almost no student gets the flying days they plan for.
Weather cancels flights. Low ceilings, high winds, rain and Ontario winters take days off your calendar, and you don't get them back.
Breaks cost you progress. When a week or two passes between lessons, you spend the start of the next flight getting back to where you were. You end up paying to relearn the same lesson more than once.
Life happens. Work, family and other commitments force breaks you didn't plan for.
People get sick. You, your instructor, or both. A cold grounds a pilot, and it should.
Needing more than the minimum is normal, not a failure. Our 70-hour example is a planning scenario, not a promise of when you'll finish.
What actually helps
Fly as often as you can, at least two to three times a week. Consistency saves more hours than talent does.
Finish ground school before or early in your flight training, so your time in the air goes to flying, not catching up.
Expect weather days and build them into your timeline from the start.
Budget for more than 45 hours so a delay costs you time, not stress.
Part two · Money
Our prices. No guessing.
Money is the reason many people never start flight training, and why some never finish. We don't want it to be your biggest obstacle. And we definitely don't want it to be a surprise.
We're preparing to launch. These are the prices we expect to charge when we open, not finalized rates.
Cessna 172 rental
$220 / hr
Fuel included. A surcharge may apply only if avgas rises above $3.00 per litre; its amount has not been set.
Flight instructor
$100 / hr
Your instructor keeps $60. We believe a well-paid instructor is a focused instructor who stays with you for your whole licence.
Ground briefing
$50 / hr
Before and after flights. Your instructor keeps $30; $20 goes toward running our facilities.
Solo supervision
No fee
When you're solo, you pay for aircraft rental, with applicable tax and any fuel surcharge — no supervision charge.
Online ground school
About $199
Paid separately to the provider. We recommend Canadian Flight Trainers, ideally before you start flying.
School training tax
13% HST
Shown separately in the budgets below, so it's never a surprise.
Canadian Flight Trainers advertises self-paced PPL ground school, PSTAR and radio exam preparation, and a T2202 tuition receipt. Confirm current pricing, course requirements and receipt eligibility with the provider.
Paid to your doctor, Transport Canada, your examiner or suppliers. These are budgeting allowances, not guaranteed third-party prices.
Aviation medical exam
About $150
Each examiner sets their own fee; budget roughly $100–$250.
PPAER written exam
Budget $150
Transport Canada's scheduler currently lists $131.54; our example retains a $150 allowance.
Flight test examiner
$450–$500
We use $500 in both examples. Aircraft time for the test may be additional.
Private Pilot Licence issuance
$55
Transport Canada licence issuance fee.
Charts, logbook & study materials
About $350
Your choices and supplier prices may vary.
